Obscure Items You Didn’t Realize You Need To Pack…

Updated: Sep 18, 2022

As I mentioned in “Episode 3: Pack Your Bags!”, you should only bring the absolute necessities on your travels because you’re going to be carrying everything on your back. While this may be a bit extreme for many travelers, I opt not to check any bags to make the process that much easier and faster. Trust me, I have met an exponentially higher number of travelers who wished that they had packed less instead of more. While the basics are fairly obvious, there are also many obscure items that may slip your mind. Every one of these items is broken down in more detail in Episode 3, but my personal packing list of obscure items for my trip to Mexico was…

  • Water resistant watch

  • Cards (waterproof)

  • Lifestraw water bottle

  • Reef-safe Sunscreen Sticks (Banana Boat)

  • Lotsss of bug spray

  • Anti-itch cream for when I inevitably get eaten anyways

  • Bars, bars, and more bars! (I’m a hungry traveler)

  • Shampoo/Conditioner bars (I love the Ethique sampler pack)

  • Embroidery thread (unlimited opportunities for crafts)

  • Journal!

  • Fanny pack (yes it may look dorky but its effectiveness cancels out the embarrassment)

  • Water sandals (Chacos, Tevas, Keens, etc)

  • Mini first-aid kit

  • Immunity boosters (You will get sick. This may help)

  • Activated Charcoal (what she said^)

  • Random snack bag (eat the snacks and fill the empty bag with any valuables like passport, money, etc)

Whether you’re heading somewhere warm like me or not, many items on this list are obscure essentials for travel in almost all locations. So get excited about all the random stuff you get to carry across the globe! And expect and accept that you will probably lose at least half of it along the way!
